This antique Chinese qipao cheongsam purple plum blossom butterfly embroidered dress dates from the 1920s. It is hand stitched made of a purple plum color silk damask weave fabric with a woven plum blossom flowers, bells, drums, wheel of law, coins, canopy, vase, Xi Chinese character for joy, endless knot designs, Eight Buddhist symbols of good fortune. There is black silk trim edging with colorful finely hand embroidered plum blossoms which are a symbol of resilience, perseverance, representative of longevity and butterflies which are a symbol of immortality, conjugal bliss and when seen with a plum symbolize a long life. Manchu women wore a one-piece dress which were called "qipao" or banner dress" and later became the traditional dress for Chinese women. This pretty purple plum blossoms Chinese cheongsam dress has a form fitting style, is a long below the knee length, with a mandarin collar, short cap sleeves, side slit vents, snaps, a newly added zipper closure along the side and is fully lined in a purple plum silk fabric inside. The dress measures 42 inches long, with a 36 inch chest, 30 inch waist, 38 inch hips and a 12 inch neck. It is in good condition, with only some tiny frays along the black silk trim edging and an open seam on the back neck collar. This is truly a wonderful custom made piece of Chinese cheongsam wearable art!
